What's the distinction between music advertising and marketing and music promotion?

Marketing and promotion are sometimes confused amongst indie musicians. There's a distinction between music advertising and music promotion. Let's first look at marketing.

Marketing

Marketing is about getting your goal market to know who you are, what it's important to offer, why you're offering it, and why what you are providing is something they want. Marketing is about getting your target market to know, like, and trust you.

Does your target market know you? So as to get your target market to know you, they need to know that you exist. Your goal market must learn about you and your music. How do you do that? You show up where they are. It is best to know where they hang around, what they read, the place they shop, and what occasions they attend. You or your street staff need to have a presence in front of them. You can do this by performing the place your target market hangs out, posting flyers where they are at, or by having an online presence via your website and social media sites. Basically, find out the place your target market hangs out and show up there!

Does your target market such as you? Once you might be in front of your goal market, now it's important to join with them! Engage with them! Care about them! Have a message and a goal that resonates with them. What does that mean? On a personal degree, tell your market why you do music. What conjures up your music? What's the mission behind your music? On a creative degree, create music that they will like. Marketing is about partaking and connecting.

Does your target audience trust you? Generally you will see that that once your goal market is aware of you and likes you, they may probably trust you, but that isn't always the case. During this section of promoting, your goal market is thinking: "Ok, I do know who you might be and I like you and I like your music, but can I trust that your album or your live show goes to be pretty much as good as you say it's?" Marketing is about building trust.

Music Promotion: Getting them to act.

Promotion is about habits modification. It's about influencing and persuading others to act. When you've got done a successful job in your marketing, your market will say: "I do know who musician X is, I like his/her music, I think the album will likely be amazing." However promotion is about getting them to take the next step, getting your market to say "I am going to purchase the album now." In case you are advertising a live show, you want them to say "I wish to buy tickets now". How do you get your target market to say this? Create compelling presents! Offer restricted time only discounts/special costs, special limited edition albums, music packages and bundles.
